Art / Objects

An interesting find by Josh Spear: This artist, Gautum Rao, does oil paintings of Apple products (among other things), and I guess sells them on eBay. More of Rao’s “Mac Paintings” here.

Looking at them immediately made me think of Dave White, who is most famous for doing paintings of sneakers. (Although he paints other things too — like Stormtroopers from Star Wars, for instance.) A lengthy Sneaker Freaker interview with Dave White, including lots of images, is here.

Further diversion may be found at MKTG Tumblr, and the Consumed Facebook page.

Or Andy Warhol and the Campbell’s soup cans…..

Even if you take at face value Andy’s claim that he painted the soup cans because he really loved Campbell’s soup, you have to admit that there was a heavy layer of irony and critique involved in those paintings at least among the people who bough them and wrote about them and made them iconic. With the sneaker paintings for sure, and probably with these Mac paintings, I don’t think there’s any critique of the notion of consumer products as suitable subjects for art works. It just is what it is. There is nothing here, that I can see anyway, that suggests a comment on or idea about the act of painting a portrait of a product. To me, that makes it distinct from Warhol — but that’s just my two cents, of course.
