Trump SoHo: The Donald comes downtown — and maybe, these days, he belongs.

There was a time when the name “Trump SoHo” would have sounded like an oxymoron or a punch line. That time has passed. A 46-story, $3,000-a-square-foot condo-hotel with that very name is climbing into the skyline from a section of Manhattan once considered so hopeless that it might as well be razed to accommodate an expressway. Of course, some people still won’t accept the idea — like the neighborhood residents and preservationists who recently converged outside a promotional party for the project, waving signs scrawled with slogans like “Earth to Trump: Get Out of SoHo Now!” Donald Trump thanked them for the free publicity and claimed that although the building won’t open until 2009, there are already 3,200 purchase applications for its 400 units….

As a kid, I’d go into the city and down to Soho before it was “SOHO” to find the unique, the cool, the hip, the inexpensive. I still have, from ’68 to ’70, wonderful scarf dress I bought ‘below Houston’ and the shirt a guy sold me for $2.00 because I couldn’t afford the $10. he was charging and “it looks so cool on you.”

When my daughter reached middle school and was developing a personal style, I’d take her to the shops in Soho and the surrounding area. She’d find unusual, wild, perfect (affordable!) clothes and accessories that reflected her individuality and made her something of a fashion star here in the CT ‘burbs.

Eleven years later, we don’t even consider shopping there; we can find a Gap, a Victoria’s Secret, an H+M, an Abercrombie etc. etc. etc. on every other street corner in the country, and we can fight hordes of clone-clothed kids at the local mall. It’s such a shame.

Trump can have Soho, it’s so done.
